The Life Initiative Story
A Dual Bottom Line Fund Launches

In 1998, the Massachusetts Legislature, with the support of the life insurance industry and community development groups, passed legislation to spur the creation of The Life Initiative (TLI). The life insurance companies capitalized TLI with $100 million for a 25-year period. Qualified investments include:

• Affordable and mixed income housing, both rental and homeownership

• Small businesses and job creation

• Minority and Women Owned Businesses

• Community health centers and community facilities

• Community development finance intermediaries

Commercial, Food Production Facility

$4,600,000 permanent mortgage to acquire and expand a 38,000 square foot, gourmet salad dressing production facility in Brockton creating 150 jobs.

The Story Continues

After 25 years, TLI has invested over $700 million and supported 19,000 housing units, 2,048 childcare spots, and 11,253 jobs. Given the success of the initiative, the life insurance companies voluntarily extended the fund for another 10 years.
